These mugs are inspired by the famous Battle of Thermopylae over 2,000 years ago. History tells how 300 Spartan soldiers fought to defend their homeland against an invasion from a gigantic Persian army. This is one of history's greatest stories. When we face seemingly insurmountable odds, there is always hope in fighting for freedom, and what's right.
Legend has it the Spartan soldiers carried a ceramic mug, that no one has ever seen. I learn of this mug from author Steven Pressfield, who wrote "The Warrior Ethos" and "Gates of Fire" about the ancient Spartans. Here's what Steven's research told him about the mythical mug:
"It has a fat bottom and an inward-turned lip. The utility of the mug was that it could be dipped into even the muddiest creek or puddle, set down for a few minutes to let the sediment particles settle, and then you could drink out of it! Somehow the lip and the fat belly let the mud and silt settle to the bottom, so that when you drank from the top the water was clear."
Steven asked me to attempt to recreate the Spartan Mug. Obviously, today we don't march on war campaigns through the wild, or drink from mud puddles. Our battles are different.
But if we're honest, we must recognize that our battles today are no less harrowing. All of humanity still deals with pain, unfairness, depression, health problems, the daily grind of making a living, and death. Even today's global pandemic is an opportunity for us to practice good deeds, and learn how the Spartans would fight COVID-19.
This "Spartan Mug" gives you a chance to drink your morning coffee, inspired by the discipline and honor that was required to be a Spartan.
